The US Marine Corps has halted all aviation flights for two days after the fifth-generation F-35B Lightning II fighter jet went missing - the service has lost two aircraft and a convertible in six weeks
The day before, an F-35B Lightning II fighter jet crashed. First, the pilot ejected and the fifth-generation aircraft flew on autopilot to an unknown destination. After that, the Marine Corps grounded all aircraft for two days.
Here's What We Know
The time while flights are halted will be spent by commanders discussing the basics of flight safety, ground safety and maintenance procedures. This pause will provide time and energy to reinforce established policies, practices and procedures of the maritime aviation community in the interest of public safety and military personnel safety.
The wreckage of the F-35 Lightning II was found about 24 hours after the pilot ejected. The cause of the incident has not yet been determined, but it is known that a problem caused the transponder in the fifth-generation fighter to stop working.
This is the third plane crash in six weeks. An MV-22 Osprey convertible crashed in Australia, killing three Marines. In addition, an F/A-18 deck-mounted fighter jet recently crashed. The pilot did not survive either.
