The Royal Thai Air Force is considering the purchase of 12-14 new fighters, but it is not yet known which ones, either the F-16 Block 70 or the JAS 39 Gripen.
Here's What We Know
The Thai military has recently published a vision of the army's development until 2037. The document prioritises medium- and long-range air defence systems. It also calls for an upgrade of the aircraft fleet, as the current ones are already outdated.
New fighters are planned to be purchased around 2025-2034, as the existing F-16s will be gradually decommissioned by 2028.
It is also known that before Thailand began considering the F-16 and Gripen options, it wanted to buy the latest F-35s, but last year the United States did not agree to sell.
