Court of Justice of European Union confirmed record antitrust fine for Google, but reduced it to €4.1 billion

While the Netherlands and the UK are only preparing lawsuits against Google, an EU court has confirmed a record antitrust fine for the company.

Here's What We Know

Back in 2018, the European Commission fined Google for violating European Union antitrust laws. The company was accused of illegal restrictions faced by owners of smartphones based on the Android operating system.

The case concerns the imposition of the Google search engine. According to European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, the U.S. company has completely monopolized the Android OS in terms of browsers and search engine.

The European Court of Justice upheld almost all the arguments of the European Commission, but reduced the fine from €4.3 billion to €4.1 billion due to partial violation of the company's right to a fair trial. Google representatives have already expressed disappointment that the fine has not been fully canceled. But the company has the opportunity to appeal against the decision of the court.
