Amazon wants to achieve zero carbon emissions. It is willing to make huge investments to reach its goals.

Here's What We Know

Amazon plans to invest more than €1 billion ($974.8 million) over five years in electric vans, trucks and infrastructure across Europe. The company's goal is to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2040.

The investment will also be used to spur innovation in transportation and expand infrastructure for "battery-powered cars." Currently, Amazon's electric van fleet in Europe includes 3,000 vehicles. The retailer plans to increase the number to 10,000 within three years. The current 3,000 vehicles made more than 100 million deliveries in 2021. In addition, Amazon hopes to purchase 1,500 electric trucks in the coming years. They will be in charge of transporting shipments to delivery centers.

Couriers will also deliver packages on foot and on electric bicycles. Amazon is testing such delivery methods in micromobility centers, which are located in more than 20 European cities. The company wants to double their number in Europe. But the retailer has given up on Scout robotic couriers.
