Here's What We Know
The company has been in talks to set up a new facility in Germany for nearly two years. The plant to be built in Dresden will be only the third outside of Taiwan and will play an important role in the development of the German semiconductor industry.
The new facility will be able to process 40,000 300mm silicon wafers each month on 28/22nm CMOS and 16/12nm FinFETs. The plant will create 2,000 new jobs in Lower Saxony. Construction will begin in the second half of next year, with start-up scheduled for 2027.
TSMC will invest €3.5bn ($3.85bn) in the new facility. The funds will be transferred to European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC) GmbH. TSMC owns a 70 per cent stake in the company. The remaining 30 per cent is owned by Infineon, NXP and Bosch.
