European smartphone market collapses to 2012 levels - Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi sales down 8-21%

The smartphone market in Europe continues to fall on hard times. According to Counterpoint Research, shipments have fallen to an 11-year low.

Here's What We Know

The second quarter of 2023 ended with another decline. The European smartphone market declined by 12 per cent compared to the same period in 2022 and by 6 per cent compared to the second quarter of 2012, renewing an 11-year low.

Meanwhile, Western Europeans were less likely to buy smartphones than Eastern Europeans. In these regions, sales fell by 14% and 8% respectively.

Samsung remained the market leader. The share of the South Korean manufacturer in Europe was 33% against 31%. Despite the growth, shipments decreased by 8%. Apple ranks 2nd with 23% against 25% and a 21% drop in sales.

The top three is rounded out by Xiaomi. Like Samsung, the Chinese company reduced shipments (by 9%), but its market presence grew slightly (from 19% to 20%). OPPO closes the top five with a share of 3% against 5% a year earlier. It sold 51% fewer smartphones in the reporting period.

realme is the only company in the top five that managed to increase not only its share (from 3% to 4%), but also its shipments (by 12%). First of all, sales of realme smartphones increased due to growth in the Russian Federation.
