Rumour: Apple stops developing its own 5G modem
Apple has been working on developing its own 5G modem for several years now. It was originally planned to be unveiled in 2024 or even 2023. But a recent Bloomberg report said the timeline has been pushed back to late 2025 or early 2026. Now the leaks are even more inconsolable.
Here's What We Know
Insiders, citing sources connected to the company, said that Apple has stopped developing the modem altogether: investment in the project has ceased and specialised departments have been liquidated. Apparently, attempts to make its own modem were unsuccessful.
Earlier, other sources reported that the project had a lot of problems, and it turned out to be a "spectacular failure".
Either way, these are just rumours for now. But we wouldn't be surprised if Apple and Qualcomm sign a new co-operation contract soon. The current contract is valid until 2026.
By the way, it was because of Qualcomm that Apple started developing its own modem. Now it is Qualcomm that supplies 5G modems for "apple" devices, but Apple is sure that their prices are overpriced. The companies even clarified relations in court, but in the end Apple had to make peace with Qualcomm.
