Apple will be the first to get TSMC's 2nm process chips
DigiTimes is reporting that Apple will be the first company to get new 2-nanometre chips from TSMC.
Details
It's too early to talk about a finished solution - TSMC is expected to switch to the 2nm process in mid-2025. The company is already building two new facilities to produce such chips and is working on authorisation to build a third.
The manufacturing process will be more complex, but a 2nm processor can fit more transistors, leading to increased speed, performance and more efficient power consumption. For example, the switch from 5nm technology to 3nm process technology provided a 20 per cent increase in GPU speed, a 10 per cent increase in CPU speed and a 2x increase in Neural Engine speed for iPhones, as well as similar improvements on Macs.
Incidentally, Apple introduced 3-nanometre chips for its iPhones and Macs for the first time last year and purchased all of TSMC's 3-nanometre chips for its devices. The company is one of TSMC's major customers, so the fact that it will be the first to get the new products is not surprising.
On top of that, TSMC is already rumoured to be starting work on more advanced 1.4nm chips, which are expected to arrive in 2027. Apple is said to be keen to reserve TSMC's initial manufacturing capabilities for both 1.4nm and 1nm technologies.
