For the past year or more, the internet has been abuzz with rumours that Apple is preparing to release a Watch Ultra smart watch with a microLED display. They were expected in 2025 or 2026, although many insiders said that the timeline could be pushed back even to 2027. As a result, however, this project seems to have come to an end.

Details

The other day, AMS-Osram, which is a supplier to Apple, announced that it was reviewing its microLED display strategy due to the unexpected cancellation of a major project. This caused the company's stock to drop nearly 40%.

AMS-Osram did not say which project and customer it is referring to, but insiders say it is Apple.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple has cancelled the release of Watch Ultra with microLED display after all, as well as abandoned all its projects related to microLED. According to his information, Apple has concluded that the technology will not add significant value to its products, as well as considered the costs of microLED production too high.

However, there are other findings. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman claims that AMS-Osram was just one of the suppliers. He suggests that the Apple Watch Ultra could still switch to microLED displays.

It was previously expected that all of the company's devices would eventually switch to microLED screens, first the Apple Watch, then the iPad, iPhone, and finally the MacBook.
