Stock images service Getty Images has banned the placement and sale of pictures that were created by neural networks.

Here's What We Know

Getty Images joins FurAffinity, PurplePort and Newgrounds, which also previously imposed similar restrictions. Images that were created with the Stable Diffusion, DALL-E or Midjourney tools fall under the ban.

Getty Images CEO Craig Peters said that the restrictions are a preventive measure in order to eliminate the possibility of copyright infringement. So far the service of stock images has not encountered similar problems. But the site is taking preventive measures to avoid possible reputational damage.

Flashback

Neural networks are trained on existing works to create their own images. These can be stock photos, news articles, artists' social media pages, or existing artwork. Artificial Intelligence works could presumably contain elements of known images, which could be a potential copyright infringement.
