While many countries talk about digitalization and digital development, in the village of Bansi in India, the local government has banned the use of cell phones by children and teenagers under the age of 18.

Village council members unanimously passed a total ban on smartphone use by children, with officials assuring that parents also supported the decision. Whether anyone gave those minors a say is unknown (but unlikely).

The reason was gadget addiction, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when kids started spending more time playing games, watching videos and websites.

Violators will have to pay a fine of 200 rupees, which is about $3. But officials promise not to fine them right away, but after the first violation they will hold preventive conversations.

By the way, this is not the first such case in India. For example, earlier this year, a village in the state of Maharashtra introduced a "digital detox". Every night at 7 p.m., a siren sounds to signal the start of an hour and a half of detoxification, during which locals must put away their smartphones.
