Enthusiast runs a Doom game on a Christmas tree toy
The challenge of running Doom on devices that were not designed for it, to say the least, continues. One enthusiast was able to run the 1993 game on a Christmas tree toy.
Here's What We Know
The game Doom now runs on a Christmas tree toy in the form of an IBM PC computer. The device is equipped with an LCD display of about 1", and the controls are a Bluetooth keyboard paired with a wireless mouse or a game controller.
The body of the toy was printed on a 3D printer. According to its size, a printed circuit board was created. Also the Christmas tree toy received an ESP32-C2-Wrover-02 microcontroller, an I2S amplifier, a small speaker, a USB port and a battery. Despite the very compact size of the speaker, it is able to provide music during the game.
Naturally, there is not enough memory to run a full version of Doom. For this reason, the enthusiast used the GBA Doom Port. This is a special version of the game, optimized for gadgets with small amounts of memory. For sound effects I had to convert audio files into .imf format, because ESP32 doesn't support .mus format.
