The Russian Navy will equip nuclear-powered Yasen-M-class submarines with hypersonic Zirkon cruise missiles with a launch range of up to 1,000 kilometres and a maximum speed of more than 11,000 km/h
The Russian Navy intends to arm Yasen-M class submarines with hypersonic cruise missiles Zirkon. This was announced by the head of the largest shipbuilding enterprise Alexei Rakhmanov.
Here's What We Know
The Yasen-M class nuclear-powered submarines, known as Project 885M, are being built as part of the Russian Navy modernisation programme. They will be a replacement for old submarines that have been in service since the Soviet era.
The sea-based Zirkon hypersonic missiles have a launch range of up to 1,000 kilometres. Russian sources say the maximum flight speed is Mach 9 (11,025 km/h) and will pose problems for air defence systems.
"The Admiral Gorshkov (pictured above) is the first ship to receive Zircon hypersonic missiles." The Russian Navy frigate tested its strike capabilities in the western Atlantic Ocean in early 2023.
