India sends first-ever strike submarine to Australia - INS Vagir class Kalvari will take part in the exercise

The Indian Navy has sent a submarine to Australia for the first time in history. The historic visit was made by the Kalvari class submarine INS Vagir.

The Indian submarine's mission began in June 2023. The previous day, it arrived in Australia where it will take part in a military exercise along with Royal Australian Navy units off the country's west coast.

In parallel, Indian Navy warships are participating in exercises on the east coast of Australia. Specifically, MALABAR 23, which ran from 11 August, concludes on 21 August and the three-day exercise AUSINDEX 23 begins on 22 August.

INS Vagir is the fifth Kalvari class diesel-electric submarine. She was commissioned into the fleet in January 2023. The submarine is 67.5 metres long and can reach a maximum speed of 37 km/h. It has a range of up to 12,000 kilometres.

The submarine is capable of carrying out missions of 50 days. The crew consists of eight officers and 35 sailors. INS Vagir carries torpedo tubes (533 mm) and SM.39 Exocet anti-ship missiles.
