Ingalls Shipbuilding received $154.8 million to modernise USS Zumwalt - America's most advanced destroyer will receive the Conventional Prompt Strike non-nuclear weapon system
The USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) is once again in the spotlight. The US Navy's most modern destroyer is ready for modernisation that will bring it hypersonic weapons. Ingalls Shipbuilding has received additional funding for this purpose.
Here's What We Know
HII, the parent company of Ingalls Shipbuilding, has issued an official press release stating that it has received $154.8 million to modernise the first Zumwalt-class destroyer. Earlier this month, USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) arrived at Ingalls Shipbuilding's Mississippi shipyard.
The ship will enter a period of modernisation and receive technological upgrades, including the integration of the Conventional Prompt Strike non-nuclear weapon system. This will ensure that the USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) remains one of the most technologically advanced and lethal ships in service with the US Navy. In the future, hypersonic weapons will be installed on the Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001) and Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG 1002).
Conventional Prompt Strike requires the ships to be equipped with larger launchers than the Mk 41 Vertical Launch System. The Zumwalt-class destroyers will carry 12 hypersonic missiles with C-HGB (Common-Hypersonic Glide Body) warhead.
The US Navy is betting on Conventional Prompt Strike. The service recently allocated more than $300 million to Lockheed Martin to continue work in this direction. In addition to Zumwalt destroyers, the US Navy wants to equip Virginia-class submarines of Block V level with hypersonic weapons.
