The Indian Navy has been inspired by the success of the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and now wants another such ship. This was stated by the Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R. Hari Kumar.

Here's What We Know

India has started work on a third aircraft carrier, which will be a "repeat of INS Vikrant". Admiral R. Hari Kumar emphasised that Indian experts have already gained a lot of experience in building aircraft carriers.

The statement was made while the Chief of Naval Staff was speaking at the launching ceremony of the advanced stealth frigate Mahedragiri. It became the seventh ship developed under Project 17A. The event was held in Mumbai.

The Indian Navy currently has two aircraft carriers in service. They are called INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya. In the summer of 2023, the service conducted its first military exercise in which both aircraft carriers participated.

INS Vikrant was commissioned a year ago. It can carry MiG-29K, Rafale M and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter jets. INS Vikramaditya has space for MiG-29K and MiG-29KUB aircraft and HAL Dhruv, Ka-31 and Ka-28 helicopters.
