Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems wants to sell the Type 212 Common Design diesel-electric submarine to Poland

Poland this year will announce a tender for the construction of new submarines for its navy. German holding company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems plans to take part in the tender.

The Polish Navy has only one submarine in service. It is called ORP Orzel, is a representative of the Kilo class and was built in the Soviet Union under the project 877E about 40 years ago.

To replace the old submarine and expand its fleet, the European country has launched the Orka programme, under which new submarines will be built. National Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said in the spring that a tender would be held by the end of the year.

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems is offering the Type 212 Common Design diesel-electric submarine. It is a development of the Type 212A submarine (pictured above), which is in service with the German and Italian navies. A representative of the German holding company told journalists at the MSPO-2023 exhibition in Poland.

The basic Type 212 variant is equipped with a diesel-electric air-independent fuel cell propulsion system. The submarine has a displacement of 1,840 tonnes and can dive to a depth of 350 metres.

The German submarine is 56.3 metres long and 6.8 metres wide. The crew consists of 27 people. The submarine can reach speeds of approximately 35 kilometres per hour and can carry out missions of 30 days. The Common Design version is said to have reduced acoustic signature, improved range and speed.
