The US Navy has sent the Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarine USS Florida, which can carry 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, to Norway for the first time in history

The US Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarine USS Florida (SSGN 728) made a visit to Tromsø, Norway. The guided missile submarine arrived in Scandinavia on 14 September 2023.

By sending a nuclear-powered submarine to Norway, the US will strengthen its partnership with the Scandinavian country. For the missile cruiser USS Florida (SSGN 728), which is no longer a nuclear weapons carrier, this is the first visit to Norway. The submarine visited Italy at the end of the summer.

USS Florida is the sixth US Navy vessel named after the state of Florida. The nuclear-powered submarine joined the U.S. Navy in 1983 as a carrier of Trident II (D5) intercontinental ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads and was designated SSBN 728.

Twenty years after her commissioning, USS Florida went for refuelling and conversion to a cruise missile submarine. The procedure took approximately three years, after which the ship was assigned the SSGN 728.

The USS Florida (SSGN 728) is now a Tomahawk carrier. The Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarine can carry up to 154 cruise missiles. The Ohio-class submarine is also armed with 533 mm torpedoes.
