Ukrainian intelligence has officially confirmed a naval drone strike on Russia's newest ship, the Sergei Kotov, which has been commissioned capable of carrying Kh-35 and Kalibr missiles
Another confirmation of the defeat of a Russian ship by a kamikaze drone has emerged. And we are talking about a new ship, which was handed over to the customer a little over a year ago.
Here's What We Know
On 14 September, the Strategic Communications Department of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that marine drones attacked two ships of the "Vasyl Bykov" type. Today, 18 September, this information was confirmed by a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry, Andriy Yusov.
The Russians wrote about the defeat of the Vasyl Bykov and Sergey Kotov ships. A representative of the Main Directorate of Intelligence confirms the strike. According to him, "Sergey Kotov" was badly damaged and will be in repair for a long time. The ship suffered a damaged propeller and a hole in the left side of the ship measuring 50 x 100 cm above the waterline.
"Sergey Kotov" is the newest ship of the "Vasily Bykov" type. It was launched in January 2021 and handed over to the customer a year and a half later. The second affected ship, the Vasily Bykov, was commissioned almost five years ago.
Both ships are in theory carriers of Kh-35 anti-ship missiles and Kalibr cruise missiles. The latter are often used by Russia for strikes against Ukraine.
