The nuclear-powered submarine USS Alabama, with Trident II intercontinental ballistic missiles with a range of over 12,000 kilometres and nuclear weapons, has a new commander

The US Navy has appointed a new commander of the nuclear submarine USS Alabama (SSBN 731). It became Rear Admiral Nicholas Tilbrook.

The military service decided to remove Michael Lyle from the position of commander because of uncertainty about his ability to lead the submarine. A US Navy spokesman said that the main reason was performance issues rather than misconduct.

At this point, the service has not specified where Michael Lyle will be transferred. He previously served on the Loa-Angeles-class submarines USS Buffalo (SSN 715) and USS Houston (SSN 713), as well as the Ohio-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine USS Louisiana (SSBN 743).

USS Alabama (SSBN 731) was the sixth Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarine and the seventh US Navy ship named after a state in the southeastern United States. She is a carrier of Trident II (D5) intercontinental ballistic missiles, which can deliver nuclear warheads to a maximum range of more than 12,000 kilometres.
