The US Navy has commissioned the new Independence-class littoral combat ship USS Augusta

Another littoral combat ship has joined the US fleet. It is called USS Augusta and has the LCS 34 shipboard number.

Here's What We Know

USS Augusta (LCS 34) was built by Austal USA. The cost is not specified, but usually coastal ships cost no more than $500 million. Our hero was laid down in mid-summer 2021 and launched in late spring 2022.

The US Navy received the ship in March 2023 and the commissioning ceremony took place on the last day of September. USS Augusta (LCS 34) will be based at the Port of San Diego, California. Despite the shipboard number, USS Augusta became the 33rd rather than the 34th littoral combat ship in service with the U.S. Navy. This is due to the cancellation of the construction of the Freedom-class LCS 33.

USS Augusta (LCS 34) is 127 metres long, 31 metres wide and has a displacement of 3,100 tonnes. The crew consists of 40 people, but an additional 35 personnel can be accommodated on board. The ship is capable of a maximum speed of 87 kilometres per hour. It has a range of 8000 kilometres.

The ship is armed with 57 mm Mk 110 cannons and a launcher for Evolved SeaRAM missiles. In addition, the USS Augusta (LCS 34) has platforms to accommodate two Sikorsky MH-60R/S Seahawk helicopters.
