The U.S. Navy has decommissioned two Freedom-class littoral combat ships USS Little Rock and USS Detroit at a total cost of about $800, even though they had less than 10 years of service

The day before the USS Augusta (LCS 34) was commissioned, the U.S. Navy decommissioned two littoral combat ships at once. Both represent the Freedom class.

Here's What We Know

The military service continues to get rid of relatively young ships. USS Detroit (LCS 7) and USS Little Rock (LCS 9) were decommissioned on 29 September 2023. Neither of them had been in service for more than 10 years.

USS Detroit (LCS 7) made her final deployment a fortnight ago. The littoral combat ship joined the US Navy in autumn 2016 as the sixth ship named after a city in Michigan. Its value is estimated at $440 million.

USS Little Rock (LCS 9) has served one year less. The second ship, named after the Arkansas state capital, was commissioned in December 2017. The cost of construction is estimated at $300-350 million. The ship returned from its last deployment in August 2023.
