USS Philadelphia will be the last San-Antonio-class landing ship at a cost of $1.295 billion
The U.S. Navy has chosen a name for the last San Antonio-class amphibious assault ship. The ceremony took place last week.
Here's What We Know
The amphibious assault ship with LPD 32 will be named USS Philadelphia. It is hard to imagine an American city with a richer maritime history than Philadelphia. This was announced by US Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro. He called the city the birthplace of American democracy, the Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy.
USS Philadelphia (LPD 32) is the seventh ship named in honour of Philadelphia. The first ship was launched in 1776, but sank a few months later in a collision with a Royal Navy squadron during the Battle of Valcour Island.
The sixth ship named in honour of Philadelphia is SSN 690. It is a Los Angeles class nuclear-powered attack submarine. The submarine was commissioned into the fleet in 1977 and decommissioned after 34 years of service.
Ingalls Shipbuilding will build the USS Philadelphia (LPD 32). It was awarded a $1.295bn contract by the US Navy in 2021.
