The US is moving the USS Bataan, a versatile amphibious assault ship carrying Marines, to the Mediterranean Sea
The US continues to transfer forces to the Mediterranean Sea against the backdrop of the military conflict in Israel. The USS Bataan (LHD 5) will soon join the troops that have already arrived in the region.
Here's What We Know
The US has decided to send an all-purpose landing ship with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Mediterranean Sea. The move is linked to fears that the war between the Gaza Strip and Israel could escalate into a large-scale military conflict that would engulf the entire Middle East.
The USS Bataan (LHD 5) is travelling towards the Suez Canal through the Red Sea. There are approximately 2,000 U.S. Marines on board. The landing ship is heading to the eastern Mediterranean Sea where U.S. forces, including the aircraft carrier strike group USS Gerald R. Ford, are already deployed.
USS Bataan (LHD 5) is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship that joined the U.S. Navy more than 26 years ago. It has air defence systems, Phalanx CIWS artillery systems and platforms for helicopters, fighter jets and convertible aircraft.
