Fallout 76 "return" may not have happened: Xbox CEO considered cancelling support for the project
Over the years, we have seen numerous cases of games being "redeemed". You don't have to look far to find an example, as there is Cyberpunk 2077, which was a disaster at release, but over time, thanks to numerous patches and competent marketing, players changed their anger to mercy and even fell in love with the game. But even before Cyberpunk, Fallout 76 was such a game with its disastrous launch in 2018. However, as we recently learned, the game might not have happened at all.
Here's What We Know
The same leaked documents in the Microsoft v. FTC case revealed that Xbox CEO Phill Spencer considered cancelling support for the game and "moving on".
In particular, an internal email dated 2021 states that Spencer, despite the competition with Game Pass, discussed the possibility of including the game in the PlayStation Now catalogue, as it was at a point where it "needed to attract more players". It was also noted that if the game could not reach 10 million monthly active users across all platforms, it would be better to postpone it or "walk away from it."
"In my view F76 is in this interesting place. Obviously started rough. Team stays focused on improving and finding larger audience. Feels like we either need to see this thing getting to 10M MAU across all platforms or decide to move on from it and if you believe PSNow can support it gaining relevance then I’m supportive."
Despite the difficulties during launch, Fallout 76 continued to receive regular content updates and earned itself a stable player base.
