Valve continues to roll out experimental updates for Steam via the Labs. This time, the company changed the appearance of the recommendation list. You may remember this list: users were usually given a themed card as they scrolled through the recommendations once a day.

According to Valve, the key changes in the new system are as follows:

  • It has become easier to see the key details of each game. For example, in a large window, instead of screenshots, a micro-trailer is played: finely chopped videos from the game page.
  • Viewing the list is now faster.
  • The list opens directly on the page you are currently on.
  • Reasons why a game might be right for you are given, such as because your friends play it or it's similar to other games you play.
  • There is instant access to buttons that open the full page of the game, add it to the wish list or put the game in "ignore".

In the future, additional features will be rolled out for the new system: launch of recommendations from any page in Steam, optimization of all screens and full support for the interface for gamepads on the Steam Deck.

According to Valve, it has recently been working on updating various places on Steam so that the platform works better on a variety of devices, including PCs, smartphones, and Steam Deck. We decided to redesign the list of recommendations to simplify navigation and improve the overall experience.

Lists of recommendations appeared in 2014. Judging by everything, Valve considers them a successful "feature": at this time, more than 115 million users have looked at the recommendations, which have generated 18 billion page views of games.
