"It all starts with experimentation" - Jesper Kyd about working on the music for WH40K: Darktide
Titled composer Jesper Kyd, who composed the music for the Assassin's Creed series, Hitman and others, is currently working on the soundtrack for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. In the interview he shared information about difficulties that arose during work for the project. The clip is accompanied by footage with action concept art.
According to the composer, the Fatshark team first told him about the environment in Darktide:
"These are huge industrial locations with mechanisms. Only the residents of the city have forgotten how they actually work. Therefore, the residents perceive them as something mystical."
The idea of "living machines" should be reflected in music, emphasizes Kyd. In this he was helped by numerous experiments and old analog synthesizers, which sometimes sounded a little wrong. It is also necessary to weave into the soundtrack the path of heroes who perform tasks for the good of the Empire - here he turned to the usual choral singing for the franchise. An organic interweaving of voices and sounds of machines became the main test for Kyd.
The composer not only writes music for games, but is also a gamer himself. He is sure that this passion helps him work. Imagining himself in the user's home, he reflects on what surprised him most about the sound.
"I don't always know what kind of music to write - you have to experiment a lot. But I understand that I have found the same thing when emotions appear."
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide will be released on September 13 on PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), Xbox Series and Game Pass. Jesper Kyd also composed the music for the trailer shown during the Summer Game Fest. This is not the first time the composer has collaborated with Fatshark - in the past, the author wrote the soundtrack for two Vermintide.
