"It was a mistake" - the developer on a bunch of Skellige marks in The Witcher 3
CD Projekt RED held another stream as part of the studio's anniversary celebration. The last of them was dedicated to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and the leading designer of quests Philipp Weber was invited as a guest. During the interview, he touched on an aspect of the game that still scares fans - the question marks on Skellige map.
Those who at least once played the Witcher 3 were definitely impressed by the huge number of marks around Skellige. Almost all of them lead to underwater chests with contraband. And these sirens who want to dismantle the boat for souvenirs!
According to Mr Weber, the studio did not plan to add so many questions to the map. At most, such chests should not have been marked at all. The specialist shared that at the end of 2014, the studio did not have enough time to fill a large location. something more meaningful.
"I can openly admit that I was one of those who put question marks around the world, but I have something to answer in my defense. I placed a lot of terrible contraband chests. Initially, we added them along with a flock of seagulls circling around so that gamers paid attention. But we did not plan to mark such places on the map."
The designer agrees that placing so many points of interest in the world was a mistake. By design, players had to find several caches on the way to the current objective, but there was no need to explore them all. "Without icons, users would hardly be able to find all the chests, but no one asked for it." - noted Weber.
We will remind you that CDPR is currently working on the continuation of the Witcher series. The next game does not have "4" in the name, as its developers insist. There are not many details of the project: it will be based on Unreal Engine 5, and the game director of GWENT was appointed as its head.
