Jason Schreier tells that the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has run into a number of problems So development has been paused, and when and how it will recover, no one really knows.

Aspyr Studios is producing the remake. Schreier sources say the following:

  • On June 30, Aspyr completed a vertical cut of the remake, a special demo for internal use, which was shown to partners at Lucasfilm and Sony.
  • Employees were satisfied with the result and thought they were closing in on a deadline. However, studio bosses announced that the vertical cut did not meet their expectations.
  • According to one source, a stupid amount of money and time was spent on the demo - it is impossible to maintain development in this form.
  • Another point of conflict may have to do with terms. At the beginning of production (according to Schreyer, it started three years ago) Aspyr planned to release a remake by the end of 2022. Now a more plausible term looks like 2025.
  • In July, two important members of the Knights of the Old Republic team were abruptly fired - art director Jason Minor and design director Brad Prince.
  • Development of the remake has been suspended indefinitely. Two Aspyr bosses have told employees that the studio is looking for other contracts and projects.

Aspyr is part of the Embracer Group family. In May, it was revealed that another studio, Embracer Saber Interactive, was getting involved in developing the remake. According to Schreier's sources, now an updated version of Knights of the Old Republic could go entirely to Saber.

At the time of writing the news, the companies involved have not commented. Most likely, the victorious remake of Knights of the Old Republic will make it: it has already been officially announced and even signed a contract on console exclusivity with Sony.
