A team of enthusiasts from the Sourse VR Mod Team has been working on a VR mod for Half-Life 2 for some time now. Recently the developers announced, that they are ready to release a public beta version of the mod next month. But the developers do not have a release date.

User-generated content will allow you to view the decorations of City-17 with a virtual reality helmet. To avoid the quality of the environment hitting you in the eye, the team ran textures through AI-upscaling (increasing the resolution using artificial intelligence). Also new animations and gestures for the main character Gordon Freeman are beeing prepared.

Development of the VR mod has been ongoing since 2017. The group recently conducted a closed beta test of the project to make sure it was ready for a public "beta." The developers warn that there may still be problems in the public version of the compilation.

"Beta" should start in September. "We don't have an exact release date yet, and we'll let you know when we do, but it will probably be Friday. The mod itself will be free, but you need to have a copy of the original Half-Life 2 on Steam."

Valve previously agreed to release the mod for Half-Life 2 on Steam, but that doesn't mean it's guaranteed to appear there-the company has yet to approve a store page for the game.

"If our in-store page is approved by September, we will get launched on Steam as planned. If not, we will prepare an alternative launch outside of Steam. Either way, we're excited for you to start using the mods in September!"

The project will be distributed for free, but it will require an official copy of the game on Steam.
