Huawei Mate 60 Pro has twice as many Chinese-made chips as past generations of smartphones
Huawei questioned the effectiveness of US sanctions by releasing the Huawei Mate 60 Pro smartphone. It has a much higher number of Chinese-made chips compared to models of previous generations.
Here's What We Know
The presentation of the Huawei Mate 60 Pro took place at the end of the summer. The smartphone costing less than $1000 in the basic modification turned out to be very popular in China. Analysts believe that the total sales of the Mate 60 series will reach 15 million units.
At the same time, experts from TechInsights report that in Huawei Mate 60 Pro two-thirds of the chips were made in China. In the two- and three-year-old models, the share of Chinese silicon is only one-third.
It was TechInsights that found that the Kirin 9000S was created by Chinese company SMIC. US congressmen suspect that American technology was used in the production of the processor.
The US Department of Commerce already wants to establish the origin and structure of the chip. Information about this contributed to the growth of shares of Chinese companies that are engaged in the production of equipment for the production of semiconductors.
As we can see, the American sanctions could not leave China at the level of 14 nm. Nevertheless, companies from the Celestial Empire still lag behind the world's leading manufacturers by at least two generations of technological process.
High scrap rates are also a problem for China. It is believed that SMIC can supply only half of the chips, while the industry norm for the output of finished products is 90%. Thus, Huawei can get no more than 2 million chips, which is not enough to regain lost ground.
