Emergency SOS function via satellite communication on iPhone 14 helped save two hikers
Apple introduced the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature, which uses a network of satellites to send messages to emergency services, late last year with the iPhone 14 range of smartphones. New Zealand introduced the feature in May, but just this week it was used for the first time.
Here's What We Know
Two hikers are stranded on a riverbank in New Zealand's Arthur's Pass National Park. Due to heavy rainfall runoff in the area, water levels began to rise to dangerous levels. The travellers were unable to get around or cross the river, so they needed help.
The travellers were able to contact the emergency services and report their location via satellite communication. The air rescue service carried out a successful operation and evacuated the tourists to safety.
