Grand: In their first weekend together, Barbie and Oppenheimer grossed $235 million in the U.S., the fourth highest box office total in history
The Barbenheimer event, coined by people on social media, marked the simultaneous premiere of two high-profile films: Barbie by Greta Gerwig about the famous toy doll and Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan about the father of the atomic bomb. The films grossed so much during the first weekend that this event became the fourth highest grossing opening weekend in history.
Here's What We Know
Hundreds of Barbie memes and a marketing campaign went too far, and the film grossed $155 million in the US and $337 million worldwide, the biggest opening weekend gross of 2023. The film's budget was $145 million, so it has already paid for itself in just one weekend. It is also interesting to note that Greta Gerwig has now become the director whose film has raised the most money in history. The audience rating for Barbie on CinemaScore is "A" (the highest), and on Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave the film a 90% "freshness" rating.
Nolan's Oppenheimer also showed very good results. The dramatic story about the creation of the world's first atomic bomb grossed $80 million in the US and $175 million worldwide. The film also recouped its production costs, as its budget was $100 million. Oppenheimer's audience score on CinemaScore was also "A", and critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 94% "freshness" rating.
Only three other films have had better weekend results in cinemas, during the premieres of the following films: Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
