Music Battle Winner: Howard Shore's The Lord Of The Rings soundtrack beats Star Wars and Schindler's List

The masterpiece music from The Lord Of The Ring has been voted the UK's favourite film score. Howard Shore's soundtrack has beaten Star Wars and Schindler's List.

Howard Shore's soundtrack topped Classic FM's list of top 100 films, receiving more than 10,000 votes. The winner was announced on Monday (28 August) on the radio station by presenter Jonathan Ross.

Commenting on his win, Shore said:

"Many thanks to all the Classic FM listeners. I’m very happy that I was able to bring you a little closer to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth."

His musical accompaniment beat John Williams' compositions for Schindler's List and Star Wars to second and third place respectively. Shore's soundtrack for The Hobbit trilogy was also mentioned and ranked 80th.

However, John Williams is the UK's most popular composer overall - his name appears 11 times in the entire top 100. In addition to "Star Wars" and "Schindler's List", other entries include "Jurassic Park" (8), " Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone" (11), "Indiana Jones" (13), "Saving Private Ryan" (21), "E.T.. The Extra Terrestrial" (30), "Jaws" (39), "Superman" (47), "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind" (58) and "War Horse" (87).

The first part of Peter Jackson's trilogy, The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring, was released in 2001. It was followed by "The Two Towers" and "Return Of The King" in 2002 and 2003 respectively.

The franchise recently made the jump to television with Amazon's series "The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power" last year. A second season is currently in development.
