In post-war Japan, a new horror rises - Godzilla. Can the devastated people survive ... let alone fight back? So, it's a relaunch of sorts. While Legendary has concentrated on its Monsterverse, merging the worlds of the Godzilla and Kong franchises, in Japan, which owns the rights to the character separately, Toho Studios, known for creating the character, is working on its own reboot of the films that started it all. And now we have the first trailer for this new version, Godzilla Minus One.

Here's What We Know

Director Takashi Yamazaki wondered, how do you remake a Godzilla film? Simple - retell the same story of a monster attacking Japan at a very fragile time in their history, but do it in a truly epic, thrilling and emotionally frightening way. In essence, Toho modernises the story. This is the first domestic Japanese film since Shin Godzilla in 2016.

The film is set in Japan in the late 1940s. "Godzilla Minus One" is the story of a devastated Japan, already brought to its knees by defeat in World War II, facing a new threat in the form of Godzilla. The trailer is brimming with post-war anguish and transitions from Godzilla's carnage to footage of nuclear explosions.

When We Can Expect It

The company's agreement with Legendary Pictures, prohibits it from releasing a feature film in the same year as Legendary, which released films in 2019 and 2021. The good news is that Toho gets a "window" to make the release of "Minus One" this year in the US before Legendary releases "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" in 2024.

For this reason, "Godzilla Minus One" will debut in Japan on November 3 and in the US on December 1, 2023.
