Les Weldon, producer of the "Red Sonja" remake, says the reimagining of this iconic character will be at least a little darker than audiences can expect.

Here's What We Know

The character of Red Sonja has been an integral part of the fantasy genre for decades. But, in a recent interview with Collider, the producer stated that the new Red Sonja project aims to be more earthy, mature, and realistic compared to other films in the genre. In part, for Weldon, that means no overuse of computer graphics.

"We're just about finished with the editing. That film is very rooted and very real if you will, but there are a couple of sequences that we have to get the CGI right so that you don't look at it and go, 'Oh, that creature wasn't quite there.' So we finished the film, and we're ready to get into the next part of post on it," Weldon revealed to Collider. "Red Sonja is also a little bit of a, I don't wanna say a darker take, but a little bit darker take than you would expect, certainly compared to the original Red Sonja. We want to be very careful with the CG to make sure it's done properly and does the film a service rather than a disservice."

Red Sonja comes from the sword and sorcery comics from Dynamite Entertainment, based on the character created by Robert E. Howard and adapted by Roy Thomas.

In the 1980s, Red Sonja was adapted into a film starring Brigitte Nielsen, who brought the character to life on screen, and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead roles. The film was made in the wake of the success of the "Conan the Barbarian" dilogy, but there is no plot connection between the films.

In the new reboot, Matilda Lutz played the lead role. Wallis Day will play the role of Annisia, and Robert Sheehan - Drygan. The film is directed by M.J. Bassett and the screenplay is written by Tasha Huo.
