James Gunn delighted fans with an announcement about the resumption of work on Peacemake: will the new season be part of the new DC universe?

Following the end of the writers' strike, James Gunn has officially announced that he has begun work on the highly anticipated second season of Peacemaker.

Here's What We Know

The director is already in the process of writing the script for the second season of Peacemaker, one of DC Studios' next projects. Also, in Threads, Gunn responded to a fan's question about whether Peacemaker will be part of the newly reimagined DC universe: "Yes and yes," the director wrote.

However, Gunn previously confirmed that the new DCU canon will only begin with Creature Commandos and Superman: Legacy, so the previous projects are not part of the new narrative, although some storylines and actors will be intertwined with the new stories.

The first season of the series about Peacekeeper, is a spin-off of the film "The Suicide Squad". Despite the fact that the 2021 film was not the most successful DC project, the reviews were positive enough to allow Gunn to develop a separate project centred on one of the characters embodied by John Cena. The series airing on Max received mostly positive reviews for its style, similar to The Boys due to extreme violence and black humour.

Peacemaker began airing in January 2022 and centres around Christopher Smith's anti-hero of the same name. The plot develops after the incidents in The Suicide Squad, revealing that the hero ended up in hospital rather than dead.

Despite failing in his mission, Smith is once again asked to join the new Task Force and stop an alien invasion known as Project Butterfly. The team managed to defeat the aliens in the first season finale, but a conspiracy organised by Amanda Waller was uncovered, so the new episodes will certainly have to reflect its aftermath. In fact, the next season should unfold after the events of "Waller," another "The Suicide Squad" spin-off centred on the villainous character.

When We Can Expect It

Although Gunn is already working on the next season of Peacemaker, it may not premiere until 2025, as the director has previously said it won't be released until after "Superman: Legacy," scheduled for July 11, 2025.
