Russell T Davies' return to 'The Doctor Who': Showrunner reveals he's already working on a plan for two more seasons
After a thirteen year hiatus, Russell T Davies will be back as showrunner of The Doctor Who. And it looks like for more than one season.
Here's What We Know
"I'm developing season 3 right now, and we already have plans for season 4," Davies tells SFX Magazine.
Davies' return to work on the series, promises to be a reboot of sorts for the show. The first season, which will be released next year under his direction and starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, will even be called Season 1. Season 2, by the way, has already been confirmed and is expected in 2025.
"At the risk of sounding sanctimonious, but I really, really mean this – they were going to do this to the show anyway and I genuinely thought, 'It needs looking after" - said Davies, commenting on his return.
In addition to Russell T Davies, iconic Doctor Who performer David Tennant will return, and his companion Donna Noble will once again be Catherine Tate. However, their return is short-lived. The actors will play in three special anniversary episodes dedicated to the 60th anniversary of "The Doctor Who". The first episode will air on November 25, and the rest will be released weekly.
Series Overview
The science fiction series follows the adventures of a time traveller known as the Doctor and his companions. Together they explore time and space, along the way solving various problems and restoring broken justice.
"The Doctor Who" is recognised as the longest running science fiction series of all time. It ran from 1963 to 1989 and ran for 26 seasons. After a hiatus, it was successfully revived again in 2005, with the season numbering starting over. And it looks like the numbering story is repeating itself with the new Season 1 from Russell T Davies.
