HBO and Max CEO, Casey Bloys, believes that Batman spin-off "The Penguin" will save viewers from superhero fatigue
Recent box office decline figures for superhero movies suggest that audiences are tired of comic book adaptations. However, the CEO of HBO and Max, Casey Bloys, completely disagrees.
Here's What We Know
According to Bloys, it's not the superheroes that are to blame, but rather the monotony of the narrative. For example, a spin-off of "The Batman" called "The Penguin," starring Colin Farrell, is still in development, but Bloys is confident that "superhero fatigue" won't hinder its success.
"I don't know that it's necessarily tentpole fatigue as much as it is a sameness of storytelling", Bloys explained (according to Deadline). "I think the key, even within DC, is trying to tell different stories in different styles, to not try to do the same show over and over and over again. I would say Peacemaker is a very different show tonally than The Penguin. So, there's not a uniformity to the storytelling and I think that helps.".
Casey Bloys also didn't hold back and gave his thoughts on its main competitor: "Unfortunately, Marvel, as good as their shows are, there's probably been a lot of them. That's one of the advantages we have at Warner Bros. is it's not just one set of stories. There's a lot of stories you can go to.".
Here's What The Movie Is About
Set in Matt Reeves' Gotham, The Penguin will tell the story of Penguin's path to power in Gotham's underworld. In addition to Farrell, the show stars Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, Michael Kelly as Johnny Vitti, and Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone.
When We Can Expect It
No release date for The Penguin has been set yet. Production on the series has been halted due to the Writers Guild strike, and the series will likely not meet its planned release date of Spring 2024.
