It looks like the Saw franchise is far from over. Lionsgate has begun development on the eleventh instalment.

Here's What We Know

After the successful premiere of Saw X and even more successful box office receipts ($108 million with a reported production budget of only $13 million), reviews from critics and viewers (80% on Rotten Tomatoes), Lionsgate Studios officially announced the release of Saw XI and even announced the release date with an Instagram post.

Given the canonical death of John Kramer, played by Tobin Bell, in the world of the franchise, there is speculation that Saw XI may follow the same script as the tenth instalment, becoming a prequel.

Saw director Kevin Greutert has admitted that they may have overreacted to Kramer's death. It would have been a lot easier to film if he was still alive.

"I think there is regret" - the director previously stated. - "It would be a lot easier to make these films if that hadn't happened, but at the same time, the first three were largely considered the best of the Saw series. There was a kind of integrity, I think, to really trying to make a trilogy and nothing more. And decisively killing the character off, that integrity, as it was perceived at the time at least, was pretty important in making the story great. But the fact that more movies had to be made, we did the best that we could, and in some cases, it was great to do it through flashbacks and all that. But yeah, there's definitely a lot of desire to have not killed him off."

When We Can Expect It

"Saw XI" will hit cinemas on September 27, 2024.
