Danny Boyle and Alex Garland have announced a trilogy based on 28 Days Later: a sequel is already in development

Director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland, who gave us the successful post-apocalyptic film "28 Days Later" in 2002, are ready to reunite for a trilogy. So far, the duo has announced the creation of a film called "28 Years Later" and their intention to offer the new zombie thriller to studios, streaming platforms and other interested buyers this week.

Here's What We Know

According to reports, the trilogy will begin with the upcoming "28 Years Later" film. Boyle himself will apparently direct, and Garland will write the script for that film and the next two. Each of the films will have a budget in the neighbourhood of $75 million.

Garland said in an interview last summer that the third film, following 2007's "28 Days Later" and "28 Weeks Later," would move events decades into the future.

"A few years ago, an idea materialized in my head for would be really 28 Years Later" Garland said at the time. "Danny always liked the idea. So, we're talking about it quite seriously, quite diligently. If He doesn't want to direct it himself, I'll be well up for it if we can execute a similarly good idea.".

The star of the first film, Cillian Murphy, has previously said he hasn't ruled out the possibility of returning to the franchise despite the passage of many years.

"I would never say never. I loved to make that movie. Was a long time ago. But sure [I would like to return.]"

Here's What The Movie Is About

The plot of 28 Days Later tells the story of Jim (played by Murphy), a bicycle courier who comes out of a coma and discovers that the accidental release of an aggressive virus has led to the complete collapse of society.

The film was well received by critics and audiences alike, and is credited with reviving the zombie horror genre. A sequel, 28 Weeks Later, was released in 2007 and also received positive reviews both critically and commercially.

Horror has not yet been given an exact release date.
