The director of "What If...?" has revealed new details about the TV-MA-rated Marvel Zombies series
The original series "What If...?" introduced viewers to alternate scenarios in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reformatting familiar events and characters in unexpected ways. Now it has received a spin-off called "Marvel Zombies" that has been given a TV-MA rating, signalling a move to more serious and darker themes.
Here's What We Know
The director of the animated series "What If...?", Bryan Andrews, emphasised the unique approach to the upcoming "Marvel Zombies" series. 'Despite using comic book elements, the show forms a separate story, conforming to the expectations of the franchise but creating something new.
"That's going to be crazy! Yeah, [it's] full TV-MA. It's spawning off of what was done on Episode [105]. The notion was, there's some inspiration from the comic, the fact that they're zombies, but we're not doing the comic, like, in any stretch. We have our own take on it," he stated. "While it draws on comic book elements, the series is shaping a distinctive storyline, aligning with franchise expectations yet creating something new, and a lot of that stuff has been set up by our talented [What If...?] writers early on, so, just taking that and... exploring that mythology in that episode a bit more. So, yeah, it's crazy."
The idea of zombified superheroes and villains first appeared in the fifth episode of the first season of "What If...?" with the title "What If...Zombies?!". This standalone episode, inspired by the Marvel Zombies comics, introduced viewers to a world plagued by a zombie virus that affects both heroes and villains. This initial idea set the stage for a more detailed look at the Marvel Zombies concept in the upcoming series.
When We Can Expect It
The series does not yet have an exact release date. It is expected to release in late 2024 or early 2025.
