When PG-13 isn't enough: Zack Snyder promises "almost a different universe" with the release of the R-rated director's cut of Rebel Moon and announces a release date
According to Zack Snyder, the Rebel Moon film was originally intended to be a gritty, R-rated version of Star Wars. But, during development, it evolved into a two-part saga with a more widely available PG-13 rating. Of course, "retelling" stories in director's cut versions is in Snyder's spirit, which is why we were given a release window for the R-rated version of Rebel Moon and assured that it's "almost a different universe."
Here's What We Know
There were rumours that the director's cut version would come just before the sequel, Rebel Moon: Part Two - The Scargiver. But the director denied this information, saying that the appearance of his "hardcore" version will take place "in the summer" on Netflix, that is, after the release of the two-part film with a PG-13 rating.
Without giving a specific date, Snyder continued to build up the intrigue and promised that the R-rated "Rebel Moon" will introduce an alternate reality to the film's universe. It won't just be a version with extra scenes or enlarged shots, but a completely different creation.
The director's cut version promises to delve into a more mature and possibly darker version of the story that Snyder describes as "fully realized weirdo, heavy metal, bizzaro-land movie."
The decision to create two different versions of Rebel Moon is due to artistic freedom. While the PG-13 rated version is aimed at a general audience given the commercial realities of blockbusters, the R-rated director's cut version represents an expression of the director's true creative vision.
