Netflix stays true to streaming and has no plans to expand its film distribution presence: 'It's just not our business'
Netflix's head of content, Bela Bajaria, said that the streaming service has no plans to expand its film distribution plans in the near future.
Here's What We Know
According to Bajaria, the streaming service has no intention of increasing its presence in cinemas, preferring to keep movies made by Netflix for Netflix itself rather than releasing them through cinemas:
"We're the only real pure-play streamer and our members love films and they want to see films on Netflix. I think a lot of companies and business do theatrical and it's a great business for them. It's just not our business."
Bajaria also said that their main goal is to ensure that viewers come to Netflix:
"Our business is to make sure that members come to Netflix. They're in the mood for a movie and they get that movie that they want to see and that is always going to be the focus for us: Making great movies for Netflix that members want to see."
This doesn't mean that Netflix films won't be shown in cinemas, especially considering the requirements to enter the Academy Awards. In addition, Netflix owns several movie theatres, including the famous Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. "The Egyptian Theatre is an incredible part of Hollywood history and has been treasured by the Los Angeles film community for nearly a century," Netflix Films head Scott Stuber said when they first acquired the venue in 2020.
