Apple TV+ orders series based on William Gibson's cyberpunk hit Neuromancer
Apple TV+ has reportedly ordered a 10-episode series based on William Gibson's novel Neuromancer, which is considered a seminal work in the cyberpunk genre.
Here's What We Know
The streaming platform has announced that Graham Roland, known for his work on the thriller "Jack Ryan," has been chosen as executive producer, while JD Dillard, who worked on "Sleight," will direct the first episodes. Roland and Dillard will also executive produce the series along with Skydance Television's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Matt Thunell.
"We're incredibly excited to be bringing this iconic property to Apple TV+" Roland and Dillard said in a joint statement. "Since we became friends nearly ten years ago, we've looked for something to team up on, so this collaboration marks a dream come true. Neuromancer has inspired so much of the science fiction that's come after it and we're looking forward to bringing television audiences into Gibson's definitive 'cyberpunk' world."
The book, first published in 1984, was Gibson's debut novel. The novel won the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award and the Philip K. Dick. It also has two sequels, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive.
Series Overview
The series tells the story of Case, a seasoned hacker with a broken fate who finds himself drawn into a world of digital espionage and high profile crime, along with his partner Molly, a professional assassin with mirrored eyes whose goal becomes robbing a corporate empire that hides many secrets.
Apple TV+'s attempt to adapt the Neuromancer novel is far from the first. Several film versions have been outlined in recent years, but no project has ever moved forward. Amazon recently adapted another Gibson novel, The Peripheral, into a TV series starring Chloe Moretz. Gibson's short story "Johnny Mnemonic" was also adapted into a film. Perhaps "Neuromancer" will make it to the screen this time around as well.
