Bulgaria has ordered American fourth-generation F-16 Block 70/72 fighters. However, deliveries have been delayed, which is why the Balkan country is forced to invest in extending the service life of Soviet MiG-29 aircraft.

Here's What We Know

A few months ago it became known that Polish industry will help Bulgaria to solve the problems of aging Soviet fighter jets. Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze No. 2 will overhaul the propulsion systems.

The Polish company has been awarded a contract for the overhaul of six RD-33 jet engines. The amount of the agreement is approximately $10.5 million. The repair work will take place over a period of nine months.

The Balkan country has 14 MiG-29 fighters in various modifications in service. To upgrade its fleet, Bulgaria ordered 16 F-16s of Block 70/72 level. Last year $1.3bn was allocated for the purchase of the second batch. The deliveries were scheduled for 2023, but the first aircraft will not be delivered before 2025.
