The press service of the Ukrainian Air Force has published a video that probably shows the launch of an AIM-120 AMRAAM-ER (Extended Range) missile.

Here's What We Know

The video was published in honour of the Day of the Air Force of Ukraine. At the beginning of the video there are shots of combat operation of the NASAMS surface-to-air missile system. Unfortunately, the low quality does not allow to accurately identify the type of missile launched, but most likely it was AIM-120 AMRAAM-ER.

NASAMS is a U.S.-Norwegian surface-to-air missile system. The AIM-120 AMRAAM-ER is exactly that, a missile that can shoot down targets within a 40 kilometre radius. It is based on the RIM-162 ESSM, which is used in ship-based air defence systems.

The Extended Range version is equipped with a solid propellant engine like the RIM-162. The warhead mass is 19kg, which is about twice as much as the conventional AIM-120 AMRAAM missile in C7 configuration. The AMRAAM-ER has an identical active radar homing head.
