In autumn 2024, Apple released a major update to the AirPods Pro 2 TWS headphones, which added support for a number of Hearing Aids Features (HAF) for people with hearing impairments. One of the options was the Hearing Aid mode.

Adam Savage, host of the iconic MythBusters TV show and special effects specialist, has suffered from hearing problems since childhood and tested the AirPods Pro 2 as a hearing aid.

Here's What We Know

On his YouTube channel, Adam Savage said that he has been using a hearing aid every day for 15 years, with experience of using both expensive devices ($5-7k) and budget ones ($900).

After the introduction of the Hearing Aid option in AirPods Pro 2, Savage tested the new feature and was impressed.

Adam emphasised that his hearing problem is not typical for people of his age, as closer to old age people stop hearing high frequencies, while he can't hear low frequencies very well. According to the blogger, Apple's headphones are inferior to professional models as a hearing aid, but are a great backup. Savage uses AirPods Pro 2 at home instead of hearing aids - their capabilities are enough to avoid discomfort and hear what's going on around him.

In his video, Adam Savage concludes that all the headphones he's tried before with similar functionality are "totally lame" ©, but Apple's offering fulfils his needs. Whether that's true or not, we don't know, but it's great that technology like this is emerging that allows people to compensate for health problems.
