The global launch of the OnePlus 11 flagship smartphone took place this week. At the event, called Cloud, the company didn't mention water protection, but bloggers in their reviews told us that it was provided. But as it turns out, it's not IP68.

Here's What We Know

A Chinese flagship smartphone without IP68 protection is not uncommon. For example, the latest Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro flagships don't boast this. The Pro version, though, will sell for €1,299 in Europe. The OnePlus 11 is almost €500 cheaper, but even for that money, you'd expect IP68 protection.

However, the Chinese company has limited itself to IP64. The description of this standard states that the smartphone is fully protected against dust and is not afraid of splashing water. However, it cannot be submerged under water. Why OnePlus took such a step is unknown. But even relatively cheap smartphones now offer IP67-level protection. The Samsung Galaxy A53, for example.

In 2020, the company launched the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. The Pro version received IP68 protection in all regions, while the standard edition was only available in the US. In the same year, the OnePlus 8T 5G was released, but the manufacturer clarified that a breakdown caused by getting liquid inside the case was not covered by the warranty, despite the IP68 protection.

A year later, the situation repeated itself with the OnePlus 9 Pro getting IP68, while the regular version didn't, except for the T-Mobile carrier variant in the US. Another year later, nothing has changed either. Only the OnePlus 10 Pro for T-Mobile meets the IP68 standard, but liquid ingress is not a warranty case.

And now, we've reached the OnePlus 11. The next-generation flagship has a simpler level of water protection, but this time the company has done without "regional discrimination". Regardless of the country, the protection is IP64.
