Ascendant, the studio that created the magic shooter Immortals of Aveum, had to lay off 45% of its staff
Bret Robbins, CEO of Ascendant Studio, said on Twitter that the studio had made massive layoffs.
Here's What We Know
Polygon first wrote about it when Bret hadn't announced anything yet. According to employees, the studio employed 80 to 100 people before the layoffs. One of the former employees told Polygon that the reason for the layoffs was the low sales of Immortals of Aveum. According to SteamDB, the game's online peak did not exceed 800 players. Now less than 50 people play the shooter.
It was a debut game for the studio, but it failed to win the attention of gamers. The game received 5.4 points on Metacritic from players and 70 points from the press. The game suffers most from the plot and long timing, although the combat system is really interesting. However, another problem is that, according to The Verge, only 9% of computers could run the game properly because the system requirements were too high.
The fate of Ascendant is unknown, but Brett said that the studio is looking for new employees, so the team will try to rehabilitate itself in the next game. It is also worth noting that the game is published by Electronic Arts, and the company that has released dozens of popular games clearly did not like this result.
Immortals of Aveum was released on August 22 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. You can learn more about the game by reading our review here.
